Great Dixter Gardens
One of the pleasant features about the gardens is that they lie all around the house. Make a circuit of the gardens and you have made a circuit of the house exterior. Each has good views of the other. Apart from a couple of mixed orchards and scattering of trees there were no gardens there when the present owners parents arrived on the scene in 1910. Of the trees a few survive: three pears, including a Williams, still cropping well; the bay laurel near to the front path; a black fig, commonly planted in Northiam and a yew tree. The apparent antiquity of the yew hedges is spurious. All were planted in 1912 or later.
